View Full Version : End of season blues, am I crazy?

Got Grass
12-01-2001, 10:12 AM
OK guys, now I'm starting to get mad. No snow, record highs, rain for over a week. Winterized and put trailer w/ equip. in back of garage. put plow and blowers in front of it for easier mount (was on grass/gravel)... Now its going to be 60 all week, I'm done with cleanups except one for a friend I could do, but its way to wet. I'm really getting bored. If this was a few months down I'd be doing taxes or getting things in shape for the spring.
Heck I sould get another job just to keep me busy, but no one would let me off whenever I needed to be.

Does everyone seem to be in the same boat, or am I losing it alone?

Got Grass, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you except for the snow equipment. It has rained alot here the past week, and everything is soaked and with cloudy cold conditions it isn't drying out to quick. I've leaves to mulch but they are so wet right now it isn't worth effort to try doing them, need a couple sunny days with a good north wind blowing to dry things up a little. I'm ready for spring already.

We had a week off because of rain and the mowers couldn't be cleaner, but we still have a week of mowing, and two weeks of leaves to go, so we'll be busy until the holidays. I know what you mean though, I'll miss the lawn work when the snow flies.

I have more than enough to keep me busy this winter. When I'm done doing cleanups a friend of mine who has his own aluminum gutter business wants me to run a crew for him. I actually hate hanging gutter but he said I won't have to even touch a ladder. I will be supervising 2 guys who will be hanging the gutter and I have to make the gutter up and make sure the boys don't screw up the installation.

We're finishing up a few small paver jobs and 2 small asphalt parking area's and then we're done. We have some stuff we can do through winter....a few tree's need taken down, some ditches need excavating, etc, but for the most part, we're stuck in doors except for snow and ice control and street sweeping.

We'll probobly start hitting the equipment maintenance pretty hard in a week or two, but for right now, we're kind of relaxing after the 100+ hour work weeks we were getting since the Sep 11th Attacks.

Take advantage of the time. Buy some good industry books, take a few classes, think of some new systems for next year, etc, etc.

Now is the time to do it, if not, we all now it won't get done at all!

I finished winterizing my equipment last week. Now that the rains have came and temperatures are in the 60's I may have to get the equipment out and start mowing. The grass is greening up and started to grow again. I really wanted the season to be over with by now so that I could rest and do other things. Oh well, I guess mothernature has a different idea for me.:(

You must be. The grass here has all but stopped and most lawns are done for season. I love sitting around doing nothing, it's great! If you like playing on the computer go get a game called "Delta Force Land Warrior", it's only $20 and you can play it over the internet for free. That has helped the past week go by quickly for me (been in bed all week with the flu and bronchitis).:(

I am rapping up my work season this week. I will be taking some landscape courses at a local college this winter and plan to get a part time job someone to keep me from getting to lazy over the winter! Come about January I cant wait to smell the scent of fresh cut grass again! :)

I still have another full month of leaf clean-ups, then it will be time to relax till it snows or till mid march to start it all over again.

I am actually the opposite of you guys. I have my winter break coming up in about another 21 days. At that time I have to establish a crew to go and do some landscaping and tree work. The landscaping comes in the spring obviously, but I supposedly have some tree jobs to do. I know of several that are good to go, but the time consuming ones I am unsure of at this point. When I know what's goin on with those I will be much better off with my plans. Also, and I am sure I am opening up a whole big can of worms here for myself... but, I hope we get very, very little snow this winter. Snow is good for plowing... when it comes to tree work though it just makes the atmosphere so much less pleasant to be in.

Still have another 2 weeks of cleanups, couple days of last mowings and last ferts to complete. The nice weather has been great this fall, but the recent rains have made the last few days cleanups harder on the bod. I'm with Ray, nursing the flu and thrown back. At least i have help plowing this year. Will be subbing out 1/2 my accounts to one of my workers. Use to do 60 accounts by myself! No wonder I hate plowing. Looking forward to ski season though, but always miss mowing!

Well............after the tornado the other day................then the cold front that moved thru and dropped temperatures back down to the low 70's:D I'm happy as can be! The weather has been a little wierd to say the least down here. A week ago it was in the lower 80's then a tornado hit the town next to us and nearly got one of my commercial sites, missed it by one building as a matter of fact. Then we had a good rain the other night when the frt moved thru.................thought cold weather was on the way.....hah..........beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuuuutt tttttteeeeeeeeefffffffffulllllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllllllllll (beautiful)!

Tomorrow and all next week more of the same. Sunshine, low's in the mid 40's and highs bumping 70 again.

Last year I was ready to crawl under a blanket and stay there, this year I can't stay in long enough to play on the puter!

Maybe we'll have one of those mild winters like we normally do, looks like it's starting out that way.

Heck, our grass is greening back up and starting to grow again.

Yeah, it's been mild here too. We just got a lot of rain (3 days straight) and although the leaves are almost all down (except the pin oaks and Bradford pears) the grass is still trying to grow...in patches anyway.

I'm wondering if we will be mowing at Christmas! :D

I hope Spring don't come late...

I got a week or so of repairs to do on equipment. Then I will be working out in my wood shop, I am sort of bored though, a nice snow would be nice.

Been a bad fall here for work. Leaves were real slow about falling this year. But, with all the rain we had last week the leaves are now mostly down and the next 2 months should be pretty good for leaves. No snow here, get to work with leaves pretty much all winter.

I haven't worked in about a month, but I've been pretty busy now that wrestling season has kicked up. As a matter of fact, I have a dual team tournament Tuesday. I'm ready to tear some people up!

It's unseasonably warm, but nice to work in. :D We finally got some rain, so the dust isn't as bad.

Leaf mulching and fall cleanups should keep me busy through the end of Dec. In Jan., I will service all of my equip. and get it ready for spring. I really enjoy my time away from mowing in Jan. and Feb. I need a little time to relax and recharge. I sleep in, complete some "honey do's" around the house, And have breakfast with some other LCO's once or twice a week. I also use this time to visit dealers and look at equipment I plan on purchasing during the upcoming season. I can't wait for the end of the season!:D

NIce weather here also and so I get caught up and ahead and then the boredom sets in. NOt easy to go work a few days and then be off a couple of days. I much rather be working. Homer I wish I would get a chance to see a tornado from a short distance. I have had them as close as 5 miles from me but not in site. As christmas gets closer the leaf biz will get busier with the final cleanups. Everybody wanted them done the week before thanksgiving.

maybe you should pull the mowers back out. some lawns are starting to grow again around here. this 70 degree weather is ridiculous. time for snow.

Do you want to be finished for the winter? I hired a guy this year aqnd I want to keep him working at least part-time all winter. I can ride down the street and see lawns with leaves, and we stop and ask if we can clean it up for them. Out of five stops, we can usually pick up two of them. We leave a business card and flyer with all of them though. Never know if they will change their mind. After cleaning up the leaves, on a few of the lawns we get to mow as well. I ask every one of them if they have considered having someone take care of their lawn on a regular basis.
This tactic also worked well for aerations this fall.

Don't be skeered to ask!
Take care, Bill!
