While I was in Calif. the guy that was doing the maintenance where my Dad lived was using a Honda trimmer. It was the quietest trimmer I have ever heard. You could run it without ear plugs. I tried to get closer and see what type and size engine it was but the guy spoke no English and he would not stop.
Not sure if it was a 2 or 4 stroke engine, but sure would like to find one. Any ideas?
Jim
It was probably Honda's new "mini 4-stroke" because it was so quite. Check it out:

That would be a 4 stroke. They are also heavier. Probably the future though.

I assume you got used to the extra weight pretty quick. How is the maintenance on it? Oil changes? Fuel consumption? Quality?

Weight is not that big a factor if I'm going to do a lot of trimming I use the shoulder strap. As far as maintenance goes just the normal stuff, they said it would use oil cuz it's a four stroke but it doesn't it's got more power then any other trimmer I have ever used. It doesn't use a lot of Fuel and I have done some big time trimming with it.
Hey Chuck,
How do they compare in price with other good 2-stroke trimmers?
I have not seen one 'live' yet so i have no idea what they cost.
It sounds like a great development. 1.5 hp should whack some pretty heavy weeds. :D

I paid $340.00 out the door.
WOW! That's not bad at all!
I'm going to seek one out locally and look it over.
Thanks for the info, Chuck. :)

Well, I think that I'll stick to my little noisier, lighter Maruyama trimmers for now. I was a little curious about the Honda 4 cycle, but my dealer told me to hold off for awhile to see how they hold up. That was a while back so should check with him again.
And to change the subject a little. Also while I was in Calif I saw another brand that I have not heard of. TMC? Got to hold one of those and kind of liked the feel. Anyone use this brand?

I quess that 4 cycle trimmers and such will be the thing of the future. At least in some states.
While in Calif. I was told that you could not use 2 cycle lawn mowers any more, and that trimmers and blowers were next.
Don't really know why?
Back in the 60's while living in CA they made us put smog devices on our cars to reduce the smog levels. When I left there in the late 70's the smog was still pretty bad. And last week during my visit I still could not see a change in the smog level, it was just as bad or worse than I remembered it. Seems to me that a lot of folks just got rich on regulating smog, and not really doing anything about it.
Oh well, just glad to be back home in the clean air.

I saw Shindaiwa's new 4-stroke trimmer last week at the Peoria Farm Show. It uses 2-cycle oil mixed with the gas just like the 2-stroke engines. Stihl is coming out with a similar 4-stroke next summer. It weighs only 6 oz. more than their 2-stroke trimmer.

I must have missed that. I was out of town for a week. And as I don't go to the big city very often, I haven't heard about this story. I'll go to town tomorrow and see if the old folks are walking around with smiles.
And, since the "Fouke Monster" stories are getting a little old, maybe they needed a boost. :)

We have been using the Honda trimmers for the last two years, We have two of them, and thay are great. Easy to use , quiet, light , We replaced the factory bump and tap head, on both of then ,with the professional tap head, allowing us to use larger diamater line, we also have a Honda mini-tiller, for bed prep. work and it has been a time labor saver for us. I will purchase Honda equepement in the future , And highly recomend ther prouducts .
