View Full Version : Trailer Tires
I need new tires for my trailer. What does everyone use? Whats the best ones to get?
I think it would be helpful if you informed us of what size you trailer is, how much wieght you put on it, and the dimension of the rim that you are looking to out fit.

On my 14',16', and 18' utility trailers I use " Carlisle Special Trailer Tire" tires. That is what my tire shop recommends. I ave. about 12 -14 mths./tire. I would guess that is about 20,000 life on a tire.:)

I have the same tires on my trailer for 7 or 8 years now. Put about 13.000on them each year x8 years is about 100.000 miles they are good year and that what there giveing me many good years. Remember trailer tires only track they can't steer.:)

Clarke, you didn't mention you have a single axle trailer and so does Nate. A single axle trailer will have much less wear on them than a tandem axle trailer. With two axles when turning, either the front back or both have to slide a bit which wears them much faster.
I use radial trailer tires on mine which have 15" rims.

I have had my dual axle trailer now for about 1 1/3 years. I have only had to replace one tire so far. That was because I ruptured the side wall turning into a narrow street, where there was a friend of mine on the other side in his car, and a sewer drain on my side, which I have had to replace about 2 or 3 tires now because of.

Changing to radials on my daul axle trailer doubled the lifetime of the tires, at about a 30% cost increase per tire.

I have the Carlisle trailer tires myself. The tires have been on it about 7 or 8 years now. But, I didn't start using it for business until this year. It pulled a tractor some, car, and hauled some wood until this year. Looks like I may get about 1/2 thru next year before they need to be replaced.
I've been using 15" BFG T/A's (car tires) on my tandem 16' for a while now. They came with them and I replaced with them. Why? They're cheap. I don't haul a lot of weight and they are rated for exactly 7000lbs. They do have a little bulge in them when loaded, but never had a problem.
One thing for you guys that really run the roads a lot. Think about getting the tires on the trailer balanced! The tire shop may look at you funny, but if you are at highway speeds for long periods of time, a trailer tire is far from perfectly balanced. It will help the life of the tire. Trailers don't have shocks to control the tire bounce. Anything you can do to control this bounce will help. For us "just around towners" this is a total waste of money. My Dad has his balanced on his travel trailer, and ever since he is getting real good milage out of the tires. He puts about 7,500 mi/year on the trailer, and its all 70+mph highway use.
My next set of tires on the mowing trailer will be dedicated trailer tires. They are made of harder compound and resist the wear due to scuffing.
