How do I do it? Do I have to take off one of the pulleys or can I just remove the idler pulley and get the belt off?

You may have to move the engine forward if the belt was adjusted in the past.It is not hard to change the belt, just roll it off the pulleys, being careful not to damage the pulleys. It is easier if you slide the engine forward first. Then when you have the new belt in place the idler should be 3/4" to 1" away from the frame.Good luck! :D

I put the belt over the front pulley first.I have a broom handle cut just the right length to take the tension off the idler.I stick it between the frame and the idler arm where the spring is and then I roll the belt over the engine pulley as far as it will go .Gloves work good here if it is hot.I bump the engine over and the belt is on.I try to get it on as far as possible to avoid stretching the belt. This is a good field repair.Remove the broom stick and get to mowing.

TODAY I BROKE THE BELT TO THE PUMP ON MY 72" CITY SLICKER. IT CALLS FOR A B 38. THIS I HAD IN MY TOOL BOX. ALWAYS CARRY A SPARE. WHEN I WENT TO PUT IT ON IT WAS TOO SHORT. I HAD THE ENGIN PUSHED ALL THE WAY TO THE FROUNT AND IT STILL WOULD NOT GO ON.
I CHECKED MY OTHER 72 AND IT HAD A B 38 ON IT AND FIT JUST FINE.WENT TO PARTS STORE AND HAD THEM CHECK THE BERL TO MAKE SURE THAT IT HAD NOT BEEN MISMARKED. IT HAD NOT IT WAS A 41 IN BELT.THERE WAS NO WAY THAT IT WOULD FIT. FINLEY HAD TO PUT A B 41 ON AND IT WORKED JUST FINE.
CAN ANY ONE TELL ME WHY THE B 38 WOULD NOT FIT. :headscra:

Prior to 2001 the machine used a B38 belt.2001 and later has a longer engine to deck belt and a B41 is used on these machines. This should be in your owners manual.Good luck! :)

D C Thanks
The Decal That Is On The Deck On My 72 Calls For A B38.
I Looked In Mybook But Did Not Find The Belt For The Pump If It Is There I Must Of Overlooked It. It Showes The Deck Belt But That Was All That I Found. It Would Not Be The First Time That I Overlooded Something When I Was Looking For It. Have Lots Of Thoes Senior Moments.
Thanks Again.
