I have a xw2500-60 that is leaking oil around the oil filter. I replaced the filter it did not help. I can't see any imperfections in the mounting surface. My 25 Kohler came with a Kohler 277233 oil filter and that is what I have always replaced it with. The manual shows that it should use a Kohler 12-050-01-s oil filter. The specs on these filters show the 277233 with a 2-7/8" mounting seal and the 12-050-01s with a 2-3/16" mounting seal. Which filter is the correct one and do you have a solution for the leak?

The filter base will accommodate either filter, but I always use the 277233.The larger filter has a bigger filtering media and holds more oil.You probably have a gasket leaking on the oil filter adapter(the part the filter screws on to).I have come across this many times. You will need an allen wrench to remove the adapter. Before you remove it,see if it is just loose
and needs to be tightened.Your dealer should have the gasket in stock.Good luck! :)

I could not stop the leak from the oil filter adapter. I took it to my dealer and the mechanic said that the adapter was plastic and a lot of them have warped. The replacement part is made of metal and retails at $180.00.
My mower is 2 months out of warranty but Kohler paid for the part and I paid for the labor which was very low. I have had very good service from Art's Lawn Mower Shop in Black Jack Mo. Thank you for setting me on the right track.
