I fiinally boke down and bought a pair- - after reading how much many of you enjoy yours. ;)
It makes a big difference, Blowing and grinding leaves all day Saturday seemed much easier.
The only problem is when "The John Boy & Billy Big Show" comes on and I'm walking around laughing, I'm afraid the customers will think I've lost it!!

One of the three best safety related investments I've ver made.
1. hearing protection with fm radio
2. mechanics gloves (padded)
3. Camel Bak
How are those things powered?
How much do they cost?
They sound like they would be great and help those long days go by quicker.

I got a cheapo set from Northern Tool - I believe 49.99 plus tax. The reception seems weak, but they work!

I am DEFINATELY getting a pair for next year, gotta get the ones where I can plug my CD player into it as well. It should make the day go by faster.

Peltor Selects I believe they are. They had a BIG pricetag of about $200, but it was well worth it. I use them in construction, and have already dropped them from a loader cab about 5 feet off the ground 2 or 3 times, hitting ever stair on the way!
I haven't had any problems at all. Its sooo nice having tunes it there, it keeps me sane when doing repetitive tasks or working alone.

Dave! I am shocked  that you would actually work alone. j/k It is dangerous working alone, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Be safe.

Only when I get ******.....
And end up cursing my crew off the jobsite. I don't usually beat them up like your old boss though. ;)

All of my employees must wear hearing protection. However,I will not let them use any that has a radio in them. I want them to be aware of any sound changes on the equipment that might indicate that some problem is developing, especially on the ztr's. A change in vibration or sound can be an indicator of some malfunction, and early detection may prevent a more costly repair.:)

Mowingman, Why not let them use radio? IMHO,I feel the radio keeps my production up, it makes tedious jobs easier, and will also boost employee moral. I do understand what you are saying about listening to the machines as a way to catch any problems, but I can tell when the rpm's dip or there is a vibration that shouldn't be there. Also, not that you don't, proper maintenance will insure that the mowers or other equipment are in proper working order. I do all of my maintenance so I know everything is in good working order or I don't use it.

Ssouth, I also do all of my own maint. and make sure all equip. is in good shape when it goes out. However, that does not mean that something won't go wrong with it during the day. Besides the maint. issue, I feel that listening to the radio can be a safety hazard also. It can divert ones attention away from what they are doing.:)

John Boy & Billy are the best! They crack me up.
If you want a good set of FM headsets designed for noise reduction and hearing protection then find a pair of Elvex. I used some the other day while on golden pond (nevermind that) and they worked great. My next set will be Elvex for sure. I have a regular set of radio ear muffs but they aren't designed for hearing protection, probably just the opposite.

I own the Elvex rechargeables and they work great, only fm though. Are John Boy + Billy local or syndicated? Up here we now get The Opie and Anthony show on 94.1 WYSP.

Opie & Anthony rock! Better than listening to Pierre Robert. :) I have to get me the Elvex for next season so I can hear them over my equipment.

I really like my Elvex. For some reason they also seem to make the day go by faster. They are a little pricey but well worth the investment. I also got the adapter so you can hook up an AM radio source to listen to G. Gordon, Rush, etc.
The Elvex have a option so you can listen to the outside noises if need be. Just takes a push of a button. But they are just like any kind of ear protection, they do not completely block engine noise. You can still hear the little sound changes of the equipment that you are running.
As for distractions, while listening to the radio you can still keep you eyes on what you are doing. Your mind is busy with thoughts anyway, so there is no difference than listening to the radio. Sometimes the radio can be a little more entertaining. More accidents are caused by watching the pretty girls than by listening to the radio. :)

I respect what your saying, but I will respectively disagree. :) The ones I have can be set so you can still hear your engine running, just not at a harmful volume. I can hear different engine sounds no problem with mine on. You have to try them to see what I mean.
Also, I think the radio puts an extra pep in my step rather than distracting me. I think it improved my production, plus it keeps me happy and "sane" by not having to listen to just a loader engine Hummmmmmmmmmm all day long.

I think Santa is going to bring me a set of the radio hearing protectors. Where is the best place to buy them? I will probably go with the 200.00 protectors.
Guido- I love my Mechanix gloves. Reduces fatigue a great deal. I wanted a CamelBak, and my wife bought me the one that fastens to my belt on my side. I hate it. I'll buy the backpack style next year.
Do you have to crank the volume to ten to hear the radio? I'd hate to save my hearing from my equipment only to lose it to the radio.
John Boy and Billy are my boys. They are based here in Charlotte, and live about two miles away from me. Met them several times, and they are a blast. They are syndicated and you can hear them in a lot of markets all across the U.S.

Wash my mouth out with soap.....
I have know idea why I typed Elvex as the brand of choice of FM hearing protectors.
Mine say Peltor on them. Though the Elvex brand might be good, I have never used them. :)

How about competion stereo install on the z's? :)
I've seen headphones before that allow outside noises to partially pass through and blend with speakers for safety and conveinance.

I run heavy construction equipment all day, which most is slightly louder than the average mower. ;)
You don't have to blast the radio to hear it, and you actually can't put the radio up loud enough to hurt your ears. Thats the whole point of these things, and thats why they cost $200.00!
Well worth it though, as I've said before.

While radio hearing protection may be fine for the boss I would not recommend it for employees who are easily distracted. One guy I had using them runs over more water mains & scalps more lawns than the rest combined.

I'm looking for a pair of those radio protectors. Where did you get those Pector Selects. Can you ear with them okay when using a weed trimmer? Do they have a website or somewhere to order from?

I got some elvax rechargable 2 years ago, love them.......I can still tell if my equipment is not running right. last july I got a set for my son to use the 1 day a week he helps me. My hearing is worth much more than the cost of them.

Clarke, I got mine at Leroy's Equipment about 4 or more years ago. Also you can get them at Ralph Helms too which would be much closer.

I have used this season the Peltor Worktunes. The yellow ones with AM/FM radio. They not only fit and wear good, the radio works awesome as well. I do have a pair of the Peltor's coming with FM and a jack for the cd player or mp3 player. It will be nice to have something to listen to when you cant find anything good on the radio. I look forward to next season with the new ones!
